Is this phone number a scam? Six checks before you answer
Last updated October 24, 2026
A number is probably a scam if people have reported it, it pushes you to act fast, or it asks for gift cards, wire transfers or codes. Search the number, read the reports, and check whether the caller ID was spoofed. When in doubt, hang up and call the company on a number you already have.

Search the number and see whether others reported it as a scam or robocall. Several matching reports are a strong signal.
2. Line type
A VoIP or toll-free line is not proof of a scam, but many scam calls use them. Compare the line type with what the caller claims to be.
3. A spoofed local number
A call that matches your area code and exchange may be faked. Banks and agencies do not need to look local to reach you.
4. Urgency and threats
The FTC lists pressure to act now as a common scam sign. A real agency will give you time and a way to verify.
5. Unusual payment requests
Gift cards, wire transfers, crypto and payment apps are how scammers like to be paid. A legitimate business does not demand them over the phone.
6. Verify on your own
Hang up and call the organization on the number printed on your card or statement. Do not use a number the caller gives you.
Questions
Can a scam call come from a real-looking number?
Yes. Caller ID can be faked, so a normal-looking number proves nothing.
What if the number has no reports?
A new scam number may not be reported yet. Lack of reports is not a clean bill of health.
Should I answer to find out?
No. Let unknown numbers go to voicemail and check them first.
What should I do if I already paid a scammer?
Contact your bank or card issuer right away and report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
Are community reports always right?
No. They are personal experiences and opinions, so use them alongside your own judgment.
