What is neighbor spoofing, and how do you spot it?
Last updated October 24, 2026
Neighbor spoofing is when a caller fakes a number that matches your own area code and first three digits so you think it is local and answer. The number is not really theirs. A local-looking call proves nothing, so ignore it or block it if you do not know the caller.
Get Ms. Number on the App StoreHow it works
Scammers use software to put any number they like on your caller ID. They pick one that looks like yours because people answer local calls more often.
Signs you are getting one
The number matches your area code and exchange, nobody you know uses it, and a recorded message or a pushy stranger is on the line.
What to do
Let it go to voicemail, do not call back, and block the number. If the call claimed to be a bank or agency, contact them on a number you already have.
Why blocking the number does not end it
Spoofers rotate numbers, so one block only stops that one. Carrier tools and apps that flag the pattern help more. Ms. Number's Neighbor Spoof Shield is built to help you spot it.
Questions
Is neighbor spoofing illegal?
Spoofing with intent to defraud is illegal in the US under the Truth in Caller ID Act. See the FCC page below.
Can someone use my number to spoof others?
Yes, and you may get angry calls. It usually does not mean your phone is hacked.
Should I call the number back?
No. The real owner of a spoofed number is often an innocent person.
Does STIR/SHAKEN stop it?
It helps carriers verify caller ID, but it does not catch every spoofed call.
