Who called me from a private number or with no caller ID?
Last updated October 24, 2026
If a call shows Private, No Caller ID or Unknown, the number is hidden, so no lookup app can search it. Truecaller says it cannot identify hidden or private numbers. Let it go to voicemail and ask your carrier about call-tracing options. Block unknown callers if it keeps happening, and report harassment to the FTC.

Truecaller's help center says it is not possible to identify hidden or private numbers, because the number has to be visible on the screen (Truecaller support, fetched October 24, 2026). The same holds for any reverse lookup: there is no number to search.
What you can do
Let the call go to voicemail and listen for a real message. Use your phone's setting to silence unknown callers, or block hidden numbers in your dialer or carrier tool (Apple Support, fetched October 24, 2026). Do not call back, and never give codes or payment details.
If it is harassment
Write down the date and time of each call and contact your carrier. Report scams at reportfraud.ftc.gov, and call local police if you feel threatened.
Best for / not for
Ms. Number is not for hidden numbers, since it needs a visible number to search. It fits when a number does show: check it, read the reports, and block it in one tap.
Questions
Can Truecaller identify a private number?
No. Its own help page says the number must be visible on the screen.
Can I find out who called from No Caller ID?
Not with an app. Your carrier may be able to help in cases of harassment.
Should I answer a private number?
It is safer to let it go to voicemail and see whether a real message follows.
Can I block private numbers?
Yes. Use silence unknown callers on iPhone or your dialer's block setting on Android.
Where do I report a scam call?
Report it to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
